3.14 Pi Day

Happy Pi Day! The homeschool kids had an early celebration yesterday and gathered together for afternoon of Math Magic - making dodecahedrons, building paper castle, folding origami bracelets, doing tongue-twisters (try saying "duotrigintillion"), performing math tricks, reading funny excerpts from "Phantom Tollbooth", "Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi" and the likes, and most importantly, eating pies, the most appropriate way to celebrate Pi Day.

Afterwards, Serena & I made our way to the newly renovated Science World and discovered these wonderful little blocks called Keva planks.

We started stacking them and next thing we knew we were building this super tall tower. We impressed even ourselves with the resulting structure and attracted the attention of the staff who took a picture for their video display. A grand finale to top off our Pi Day celebration!

Taekwondo Gold Medalist

Serena entered this year's taekwondo tournament with her newly minted camouflage belt.

Last year she entered three divisions and won a bronze and a silver as an orange belt, two levels below her current belt.

This year she was in two divisions - Pattern and Sparring - and she brought home a gold for pattern!

My Bubbly Hy-POP!-thesis

Serena entered her very first adjudicated Science Fair. Her inquisition: Which brand of bubble gum blows the biggest bubble? The question led her to form her "Bubbly HyPOP!thesis" and continued onto the steps of scientific process.  5 packs of bubblegum and more than 100 bubbles later, she came to the conclusion that Hubba Bubba, as she suspected, delivers the biggest bubble.

Serena presented her project to a panel of 3 judges and earned herself a 2nd place at the fair. She is thankful to her valiant test subjects who risked tooth decay and dislocated jaws for her experiment.
